이 설치 작품은 두 명의 참여자를 초대합니다. 각자 자신이 소중하게 여기는 무언가를 담은 디지털 이미지를 올려놓고, 엄선된 단어와 이모지 어휘를 사용해 상대방의 이미지를 묘사합니다. 이 입력값은 알고리즘으로 가중치가 부여되어 물리적인 움직임으로 변환되고, 시소는 한쪽으로 기울기 시작합니다. 이 불균형은 단순한 물리 현상이 아닙니다. 가치가 흐르고, 감응하고, 서로에게 기대는 방식을 몸으로 느끼게 하는 안무적 은유입니다. 작품은 고정된 가격이나 시장 논리 대신, 주관적 해석과 감정적 공명을 전면에 내세웁니다. 매 교환이 끝날 때 출력되는 '영수증'에는 그 대화의 언어적 흔적이 고스란히 담기며, 거래가 아닌 인식의 순간을 기록한 시적 유물로 남습니다.

Created by Peilong Ruan, Seesaw Economy Manifesto is a relational installation that reimagines value exchange through embodied interaction, ambiguity, and co-created meaning. Departing from the metaphor of economic balance as a static scale—neutral, rigid, and abstract—the project proposes the seesaw as a dynamic, playful alternative: a mechanism of mutual responsiveness, negotiation, and care. Can we collectively imagine another economy system, that allows us to communicate, understand and express the value behind things? In our daily lives, value seems self-evident: a number on a price tag, a salary figure, a score, a ranking. But behind these numbers lies a long history of abstraction. From Marx’s critique of commodity fetishism to David Graeber’s anthropological insight that money evolved not from barter but from systems of debt and power, scholars have long questioned the neutrality of value. If currency reduces relationships to numbers, what gets lost in translation? Peilong Ruan The installation invites two participants to place digital images representing something they personally value. They then describe each other’s offerings using a curated vocabulary of words and emojis. These inputs are algorithmically weighted and translated into physical movement, causing the seesaw to tilt. The resulting imbalance becomes a choreographed metaphor for value in motion—fluid, affective, and co-dependent. Rather than equating value with fixed prices or market logic, the project foregrounds subjective interpretation and emotional resonance. The “receipt” printed at the end of each interaction captures the linguistic traces of the exchange, forming a poetic artefact that documents perception rather than transaction. Designed as both critique and celebration, Seesaw Economy Manifesto draws upon theories of gift exchange, care ethics, and participatory design to question how we assign worth in contemporary life. By transforming abstract notions of value into felt, negotiated experience, the work gestures toward a different kind of economy—one built not on equivalence, but on rhythm, trust, and play.
