디지털 네트워크 패턴이 표면에 새겨진 이 프로젝트는 공공 정원 전체에 걸쳐 펼쳐집니다. 잔디밭과 반려견 놀이 공간에도 돌블록 포장으로 그 흔적이 이어지죠. AI의 숨겨진 인프라와 윤리적 차원을 공공 공간에 영구적인 형태로 구현한 이 작업은, 인간을 넘어선 존재들과의 소통에 대한 더 깊은 대화를 이끌어내길 바라는 HAQUE TAN의 바람을 담고 있습니다. 프로젝트의 출발점은 지역 커뮤니티 활동가가 던진 한 가지 질문이었습니다. "이 나무가 말을 할 수 있다면, 어떤 이야기를 들려줄까요?" 이 작업은 HAQUE TAN이 이어온 인간 너머의 공공 공간을 디자인하는 작업 위에 세워졌습니다.
아직 인간이 비인간 존재와 직접 대화를 나누는 것은 불가능합니다. 하지만 HAQUE TAN은 우리가 분명 어떤 진전을 이루고 있다고 믿습니다. 무슨 말을 나눠야 할지 아직 확신하지 못하더라도, T(h)ree를 방문하면 그 대화를 미리 연습해볼 수 있습니다. 작품에 가까이 다가가면 지역 주민들의 목소리를 합성한 여러 목소리가 들려올 것입니다. 어떤 질문이든 던져보세요. 반드시 응답이 돌아옵니다. 이 상호작용을 이끄는 LLM에는 나무에 대한 주민들의 개인적인 이야기와 기억, 시각, 신념이 담겨 있습니다. 지역 전문가와 수목 전문가의 의견도 반영되어 있죠. 이 모든 것이 모여 나무가 지닌 성격과 역사를 다층적이고 주관적인 방식으로 그려냅니다.
스마트홈 기기, 모바일 기기 등 우리 주변의 온갖 기술 장치들이 목소리를 내는 시대입니다. 저희는 이 관계를 뒤집고 싶었습니다. 기술을 통해 자연 풍경 속에 '목소리'를 심어두고, 사람들이 살아있는 세계를 다르게 감각하도록 이끄는 것이죠. AI는 사회적으로도, 환경적으로도 종종 부정적인 영향을 남기는 기술입니다. 바로 그 AI가 인간과 비인간 종 사이의 진정한 교감을 가능하게 하는 매개가 될 수 있을지, 저희는 그 가능성을 탐구하고 있습니다.

조형적인 흙 언덕 위에는 설치 전체를 구동하는 시스템의 상세한 다이어그램도 새겨져 있습니다. HAQUE TAN은 주류 기술 개발 과정에서 의도적으로 감춰진 기술의 이면을 드러내고자 했습니다. AI나 LLM과 같은 최신 기술이 기업의 상상력 바깥에서 어떻게 재해석되고, 재설계되고, 새롭게 제시될 수 있는지—더 많은 사람들이 직접 만들고 운용하는 데 참여할 수 있는 방식으로—라는 질문을 작품 안에 녹여낸 것입니다.

Co-created by HAQUE TAN ( Ling Tan and Usman Haque ) with residents of Regent’s Park Estate, T(h)ree is a permanent landscape intervention in Central London, that integrates community knowledge with the natural infrastructure and AI to give ‘voice’ to a London Plane Tree that has witnessed hundreds of years of history, so people can talk with it and ask questions. Blending natural, human and technological systems, sculptural root-like mounds formed from charred wood and rusted steel emerge from the soil, connected underground by digital and mycorrhizal networks, while an embedded planetary-scale system diagram maps the project’s complex ecological, technological, and social interdependencies. HAQUE TAN Extending across the entire public garden, with digital networks inscribed on the surface, and cobble sett in grass areas and even the dog run, the project presents a permanent physical manifestation of AI’s hidden infrastructures and ethical dimensions in a public space which, HAQUE TAN hope, will encourage deeper dialog on more-than-human communication. The project was prompted by local community champion’s question: “if this tree could talk, what stories would it tell?” and builds on HAQUE TAN's work designing more-than-human public spaces . Though humans can’t yet directly converse with non-humans and engage them in these processes, HAQUE TAN believe that a progress has been made and even though we’re still not sure what we will talk about, visiting T(h)ree you'll be able to practice those conversations. As you get closer to T(h)ree you might hear a collection of voices (synthesised from local residents voice captures). If you ask a question any question you’ll get a response. The LLM driving the interaction is configured with residents’ individual stories, memories, perspectives and beliefs about the tree as well as input from local experts and an arborist shaping a subjective multi-layered representation of the tree’s perceived personality, character and history. At a time when voice emanates from technological artifacts all around us (home automation systems, mobile devices, etc) we hope to flip the relationship, using technology to deploy ‘voice’ in a landscape, encouraging people to perceive the living world differently. We are interested in exploring the role that AI, with its deep and often negative societal and environmental impacts, might play in facilitating meaningful interaction between humans and non-human species. HAQUE TAN Embedded in the sculptural mounds themselves is also a detailed diagram of the system that drives the entire installation. HAQUE TAN wanted to expose the hidden layers of technology purposefully obscured in mainstream technology development, baking the question how recent technologies, like AI and LLM s, could be re-imagined, re-designed and re-presented outside the corporate imagination in more creative and constructive ways that get others involved in building and deploying.
